What Are Those Small White Stones in Your Throat?
Those small, white or yellowish lumps that sometimes appear in the back of your throat are most commonly tonsil stones, medically known as Tonsillolith.
They can cause bad breath and a feeling like something is stuck in your throat.
What Are Tonsil Stones?
Tonsil stones form in the tiny crevices (crypts) of your tonsils. They are made from:
- Food particles
- Dead cells
- Mucus
- Bacteria
Over time, this debris hardens or calcifies, forming small, stone-like lumps.
Why Do They Cause Bad Breath?
Tonsil stones often contain sulfur-producing bacteria. These bacteria release foul-smelling compounds, which is why tonsil stones are strongly linked to persistent bad breath (halitosis).
Common Symptoms
- Bad breath
- A visible white or yellow lump in the tonsil area
- Sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Ear pain (referred pain from throat nerves)
- Feeling like something is stuck in the throat
Some people have no symptoms at all.
Who Is More Likely to Get Them?
- People with large tonsils
- Those with frequent throat infections
- Individuals with poor oral hygiene
- People with chronic sinus issues or postnasal drip
Are Tonsil Stones Dangerous?
Most tonsil stones are harmless. However, larger stones can cause discomfort or repeated infections.
How Are They Removed?
Small tonsil stones may:
- Fall out on their own
- Be gently removed with gargling (salt water)
- Be removed by a healthcare provider
In severe or recurring cases, a doctor may recommend procedures such as laser cryptolysis or, rarely, tonsil removal (tonsillectomy).
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical advice if you have:
- Severe pain
- Persistent infection
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
