Dark, coarse hairs appearing on the chin—especially in women—are often a sign of hormonal changes, most commonly increased androgens (male-type hormones).
This is commonly associated with:
- Menopause or perimenopause
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- General hormonal imbalance
- Aging (as estrogen declines, androgen effects become more noticeable)
It can also happen during pregnancy, but that’s less commonly the classic explanation for chin hair specifically.
If chin hair appears suddenly, becomes more pronounced, or is accompanied by other symptoms (irregular periods, acne, hair thinning), it’s worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
