Ah yes — the nana trick 😄
There is a common one that a lot of grandmas swear by, and while it’s not a cure, it can reduce the appearance of thick toenails if you’re consistent.
👵 Nana’s classic trick for thick toenails
Soften + thin + moisturize
What it usually involves:
- Warm soak (10–15 minutes)
- Plain warm water, or
- Water + a splash of vinegar or Epsom salt
→ Softens the nail so it’s easier to manage
- Gentle filing
- Use a nail file or emery board
- File the top of the nail (not down to pain!)
- This reduces thickness and smooths ridges
- Heavy moisturizer or ointment at night
Many nanas use:- Thick foot cream
- Petroleum jelly
- Or yes… Vicks VapoRub (very common)
Then: cotton socks overnight 🧦
This combo doesn’t fix the cause, but it can make nails:
- Look thinner
- Less yellow
- Less brittle
- Easier to trim
🦶 Why this helps (real talk)
- Thick nails are often due to fungus, aging, pressure from shoes, or poor circulation
- Softening + filing improves appearance
- Occlusive creams keep nails flexible so they don’t keep building thickness
⚠️ Important things NOT to do
- Don’t dig under the nail
- Don’t use sharp tools
- Don’t file until it hurts or bleeds
- Don’t expect fast results — this takes weeks, not days
🚩 When to see a podiatrist
- Nail is very painful
- Nail is lifting from the bed
- Skin around it is red or swollen
- You have diabetes or poor circulation
Prescription treatments or professional thinning can make a huge difference.
If you want, tell me:
- Is the nail yellow and crumbly, or just thick and hard?
- One nail or several?
I can help you figure out whether this is likely fungus, pressure, or just age — and what actually works best for that situation 💙
